Patrick Barnes and his wife, Becky, reside in the Bell's community, located in New Hope Township, near Jordan Lake. The Barnes family includes eight children, and three grandchildren. Patrick and his wife are members of Bell’s Baptist Church, where he serves on its buildings and grounds committee.

Commissioner Barnes’ father grew up on a Wayne County tobacco farm, graduated from N.C. State College with a B.S. in Civil Engineering, and worked for the State of North Carolina for 40 years. His mother was born in Moncure, raised in Pittsboro, graduated from Meredith College in Raleigh, and taught school for 40 years. Patrick’s mother's maiden name was Minnie Bell, the family for whom the community was named.

Commissioner Barnes graduated from North Carolina State University with a B.S. in Horticulture, and is a charter member of the N.C. State Alumni Association. He has successfully owned and managed his own general contracting business for the past 42 years. Patrick H. Barnes, General Contractor, is a commercial contracting business which includes a Nucor metal building dealership, utility installation (water and sewer lines), grading, and both concrete and asphalt paving.

Commissioner Barnes was the founder of Chatham County United, an organization created in 2004 to protect the environment and natural resources and to prevent any municipality from imposing their regulations past the county boundary line. Chatham County United further wishes to insure that Chatham County residents are governed by Chatham County.

Commissioner Barnes’ favorite pastime is all forms of racing. He has been a NASCAR fan from an early age. He also loves riding his BMW and Suzuki motorcycles with his wife. His top hobby is maintaining what is left of the 209-acre farm that was deeded to his mother’s family from the Lord Proprietors of England. A total of 178 acres of the original farm is now under Jordan Lake.

"I love the land on which I was raised. Chatham County is a jewel that deserves good stewardship and respect."
